Hydraulic gaskets: products and materials

The field of hydraulic gaskets appears to be stable and devoid of innovation, but is this really the case? As those within the sector know all too well, the majority of hydraulic gaskets are developed in rubber. Furthermore, in terms of application, gaskets – for example for hydraulic cylinders – are standardised, and so in terms of dimension, there are no particular signs of innovation.

One thing that is, however, evolving, is the innovative approach to materials.

Hydraulic gaskets: rubberised fabric or new materials?

As previously said, the hydraulic seal market is in general covered by rubber and rubberised fabrics. However, rubberised fabric is relatively expensive and may not be suitable for all projects or uses. At GBL, in response to market indications and with the aim of providing a solution that optimises production costs, we have been studying the application of alternative materials based on tailor-made polymers.

Can new-generation elastomers and polymers always be a substitute for rubberised fabric? Obviously not. Although some innovative materials guarantee extreme efficiency – providing the same performance as rubberised fabric at a significantly lower cost – they are not suitable in all cases.

At the very beginning of a project, our technicians, in collaboration with the Client, assess the possibility of using new materials.

The best materials for hydraulic gaskets

The hydraulic seal sector is therefore not as static as in the past, at least in terms of materials and the possibility to create fully tailor-made materials to design. At GBL, we have access to thermoplastic materials, polymers and rubberised fabrics to cover a wide range of demands.

In choosing the correct material, we need to take into account a series of parameters that concern the actual use of the gasket. In particular, we examine:

  • mechanical properties
  • resistance to deformation
  • resistance to abrasion
  • resistance to tearing
  • elastic performance
  • impermeability to air and gas
  • resistance to UV radiation
  • resistance to fire
  • dielectric properties
  • chemical compatibility

Choosing the right material is one of the most important factors in designing an efficient and durable hydraulic gasket that will not cause damage of cylinders or pistons. With extremely high pressures, for example, a traditional rubberised fabric might be the best choice.

There are three rubberised fabrics that we at GBL handle:

In addition to this type of material, we also offer 12 polymers and 9 thermoplastics. In addition, new materials can be developed thanks to our collaboration with external Research & Development laboratories.
